The 'Home of Golf' St Andrews is a small seaside town with a sizeable reputation that attracts visitors from all over the world. There is so much more to this beautiful town than its first class golf courses - Indeed there is something for everyone!
The Royal and Ancient Golf Club first met here in 1754, though it was first played here as early as the 15th century. This golfing mecca, now boasts seven Links courses including the Old, New, Jubillee and Castle course. It's every golfers dream to one day walk in the footsteps of the games greatest player's, on the famous Old Course of St Andrews.
'What about tee times on the Old Course?' Golf Holidays Worldwide can pre-book tee times on the Old Course. However, there is a minimum requirement of a 2 night luxury golf holiday programme, and in high season (June to September) there is a minimum of a 3 night luxury programme required. Please note, The Old Course is closed all day on Sundays (day of rest), and only the daily ballot can be used to obtain Saturday tee times, with no guarantee of success.
Eating Out in Saint Andrews
St Andrews boasts a wide and cosmopolitan variety of restaurants from Japanese to Italian, from Bangladeshi to Thai as well as establishments selling the very best top quality Scottish produce. St Andrews has such a variety of good eating places that it would be easy to eat well every night for a fortnight and not visit the same restaurant twice. On the other hand you might find a firm favourite and go back for a second or third time.
Shopping in Saint Andrews
St Andrews has a good range of independent, family-run shops and businesses where you are guaranteed personal service, a rare commodity these days. The shopping area is not large but quite unique and in 2005 was awarded Fairtrade Town status. Opening hours are fairly standard with the majority of shops opening at either 9.00am or 9.30am and closing at 5.30pm. In the summer months quite a few shops stay open later to catch those customers who have spent the day on the golf course or beach.
History of Saint Andrews
St Andrews has played a significant role in the history of Scotland since at least the 6th century, so called because the relics of the disciple St Andrew were brought here from Constantinople in the 8th century by a monk called St Regulus or St Rule. St Andrews University, is the oldest in Scotland and was founded in 1410. The elegant, ivy-clad buildings and delightful quadrangles and gardens dominate the town centre. The future king graduated here, and it is one of the top universities in Britain, often compared to Oxford and Cambridge.
The now ruined cathedral (once the largest in Scotland) sits adjacent to the church of St Regulus, where you can climb the spiral staircase to the top of an 108-foot tower for magnificent views of the town and its surroundings. The castle, perched on a promontory overlooking the sea, was the dramatic stage for several of the most notorious episodes of the Reformation.
