About golf travel to Costa del Sol
During the winter months golfers from all over the world gather on the Costa del Sol to play and practise under the best conditions imaginable. There are tour players and "wannabees". There are retired people, "climate refugees" and tourists. All lured here by the enormous range of golf and the sun coast’s beautiful climate.
Most golf tourists who visit the "Costa del Golf 'land at Malaga’s airport which is located just west of town, near the sea. From there they continue westward towards the pearl necklace of golf courses along the coast.
Spain and Europe's premier golf destination is definitely the Costa del Sol! For over 40 years the sun has shone on golfers from around the world who flocked to the Spanish south coast’s high-quality golf courses.
Over the past 20 years, the selection of golf courses has grown enormously. In 1986, when Spain joined the EU, there were about 15 courses; today there are nearly 60 courses spread over the stretch between Malaga and Gibraltar.
While the selection on the "coast" has grown enormously, "the coast" has also shrunk. The winding single lane road along the Mediterranean Sea, which formerly took 3-4 hours to drive, you can now manage in half the time. Today’s elevated highways are fast, efficient, safe and provides fantastic views of Gibraltar and the Sierra Nevada, and sometimes, in clear weather, a glimpse of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco.
If 15-20 years ago you happened to end up behind an Andalusian orange grower in a smoke-puffing diesel vehicle of unknown brand, your travel time could easily be longer. Getting from Marbella to Sotogrande felt like a big day trip.
Today you can play Parador de Málaga Golf in the morning and catch Club de Golf Valderrama in the afternoon, without problem. ”Paradoren” was in 1925 the first 18-hole course on the coast followed by Real Club de Golf Guadalmina, the first 9 hole course in 1959, and Golf Rio Real the second 18-hole course in 1965. This was followed by courses like Atalaya Golf & Country Club, El Paraiso Club de Golf, Real Club de Golf Las Brisas, Los Naranjos Golf Club, Golf Torrequerrada and Mijas Golf Internacional.
If you’d like to face a real challenge right after you land in Malaga Golf Torrequerrada is well situated. Parador de Málaga Golf is even closer to the airport, but to ”Torkan” it only takes about 10-15 minutes by taxi or car, an incredibly spectacular but fair golf course that Pepe Gancedo created in the late seventies. The course has fantastically fast greens and stunning fine close-cropped fairways that give good "bite" on your approach. One of the coast's most spectacular par-3 holes is here. Hole 3 is 78 metres from the club tee and 92 from the back tee. Behind the green there is a deep ravine.
Most courses welcome green fee players with open arms, but there are a few where members have priority and only with some effort can you go out as a guest player. For example, Real Club de Golf Las Brisas and Club de Golf Aloha in Nueva Andalucía and even Real Club de Golf Sotogrande and Club de Golf Valderrama further south have restrictions for green fee play. Real Club de Golf Las Brisas is a fantastic course that Danish businessman Herman Sauer once owned along with Los Naranjos Golf Club across the road. Herman sold Real Club de Golf Las Brisas to members, and eventually he also sold Los Naranjos Golf Club to Percy Nilsson, even though he did not intend to sell. I think Percy gave a good bid, maybe not as good as that Jaime Ortiz Patino gave for Club de Golf Valderrama (which was not for sale) when he bought it, but a good bid, it was. Real Club de Golf Las Brisas has hosted a number of events on the European Tour and makes demands on you as a player.
Is the coast clear?
The coast has thus grown, while it has shrunk, but the question is whether the coast is clear?
No, it’s not! Quite obviously there is still room for more courses and more golfers.
Golf has become a natural and very important part of Andalusian tourism. Ballesteros, Olazábal, Jimenez and Garcia are also looking to make the sport of golf accepted and acclaimed throughout Spain.
The golden mile
An important thing to know is that the climate varies along the coast, and that no other part of the country can compete with "The Golden Mile" between Marbella and San Pedro, where the microclimate is by far the best, sunshine the most, the icy winter winds from Mezetan are absent and the average temperature a few degrees higher than at Mijas or Sotogrande. Jose Banus knew what he was doing when he invested his money in the construction of Puerto Banus exactly there and nowhere else. Here you can stroll through the port in the evening sun and watch how the really wealthy spend their money. If you want to blend in with the luxurious environment it’s possible to rent a Ferrari for a day. But where do you do with your clubs then?
Many Swedish "climate refugees" live outside of Puerto Banus in Nueva Andalucía and here you’re guaranteed to meet other golfers if that's what you're interested in - the vast majority of golfers who travel from Sweden live somewhere between Marbella and say, Estepona. There is a huge range of accommodation options, ranging from simple apartment hotels to luxurious facilities. In addition, there are lots of apartments and villas for rent. There is obviously an abundance of restaurants and bars so it’s unlikely that you’ll need to go hungry or thirsty.
Experience the entire coast
If you haven’t visited the Costa Del Golf you shouldn’t miss the opportunity. Neither should you miss the opportunity to discover the entire coast. In addition to all golf courses there are plenty of lovely mountain villages and splendid beaches, and all the way down Spain's southernmost tip lies of course Gibraltar and Tarifa, both of which are worth visiting.
You who have been here before know what to expect, and that's why so many golfers return year after year. Chances are there are new courses and other things to experience, because as I said, the coast is far from clear...
