Golf del Sur

Ever since its opening in 1987, the 27 greens and fairways of Golf del Sur have hosted various top international competitions. In 1989 Jose Maria Olazabal won the Open de Tenerife, a feat he repeated in 1992. The following year, David Gilford won the competition, as did Mark James in 1994. In 1995 Golf del Sur hosted the Shell Wonderful World of Golf tournament and head-to-head battle between Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson.

In 2002 Golf del Sur arranged a new international tournament, the first Tenerife Ladies Open, which is part of the LPGA Evian European Tour, with a victory by the female Spanish player, Raquel Carriedos. This Tenerife golf course, designed by Pepe Gancedo, has an agreeable layout where one's attention is immediately captured by the black volcanic sand in the bunkers and the wide fairways.

Particularly difficult is the hole 3 on the northern course. To the right of the wide fairway is a water hazard, behind lies an impressive ravine with an ochre-coloured mountain face, while to the left there is a wide open bunker with black sand. Another notable hole is the second on the southern course, par 3 and 193 metres, whose green is surrounded by a huge bunker of black sand.
